| Melbourne. Possibly the world's largest free art gallery! |
| One of the beauties of Australia’s second largest city is its endless maze of colourful alleyways that trickle their way through Melbourne’s inner city. While your first alleyway experience will probably feel like you have just taken a step into that place your mum used to warn you about, it just-so-happens that these grungy areas are often home to some of the cities best cafés, nightspots, music venues and trendy hangouts. Don’t be fooled by Melbourne’s glossy surface, this city’s real gems lie far from view. As a general rule, the better hidden a place is, the better it will be. Try visiting ‘St Jeromes’ bar/café on Caledonian Avenue just off Little Bourke street - this place really typifies Melbourne’s alleyway culture. Don’t even bother looking for any signs; in fact the only way you can tell the place exists at all is by waiting for the odd group of super-trendy Melbournians to appear from a well hidden doorway. Once inside, you get the feeling you have just stepped into a derelict café that hasn’t seen a customer since the 1950s (except for all the customers of course) with graffiti decorating its walls and sheets of plastic to protect you from the temperamental Melbourne weather. Grab a long-neck of Melbourne Bitter, take a seat on a comfy milk crate and soak it all in – this is Melbourne. But taking a trip down a dark alleyway down here is definitely not a gloomy experience. It is a fact that Melbourne has more stencil street-art than any other city in the world and its alleyways are a good testament to this. Eight foot white rhinoceroses and green martians take up entire walls while naked she-devils and cheeky nurses appear alongside meaningful social statements, intricate graf-pieces and even life-size human portraits. With practically every inch of most alleyways covered, it could possibly be the world’s largest free art gallery. So throw on your walking shoes, grab your camera and go exploring! Places like Caladonian Avenue and Hosier Lane are definitely worth a check, however you will no-doubt come face-to-face with some mind-blowing sights around just about every corner, so it’s up to you to find them! |
