Under the Sydney moonlight Tip

Could there be a better way to enjoy your favourite Hollywood classic, surf flick or new release blockbuster than with that special somebody, curled up on a picnic rug with a glass of champagne overlooking one of the world’s most beautiful harbours?

If there is, then please let us know about it.

And with Sydney’s typically balmy summer nights, it is the ideal place to enjoy one of the cities many moonlight cinema venues.

There are moonlight cinemas all over Sydney in the summer from December through to March, with the main ones located on North Sydney Oval, Bondi Beach, Centennial Park and in various locations along the Harbour foreshores. But by far the most popular one is the moonlight cinema located at Lady Macquarie’s Chair with its breath-taking views of Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Tickets are around $20 and though you can usually pick up one on the door, to avoid waiting in a line or missing out completely, it’s probably a good idea to pre-buy (and if your thinking of climbing a nearby tree to catch a free show, it isn’t the most comfortable way to enjoy a movie…trust us on that one).

It is usually BYO food, booze, mates and picnic rug, though food and drinks are also available there.

Get to the site early to find a good spot and avoid last minute scuffles for a decent viewing position. In fact good spots are highly sought after and follow similar rules to the real estate world with location, location, location always high in everyone’s minds. Higher up the hill tends to be the more sought-after real estate and simple bartering rules apply with spot-swaps commonplace and I have even heard reports of spots being ‘bought’ with wine, cheese-and-cracker deals.

Food and drinks are usually on sale from about 6:30pm and the movies start around 8-8:30pm. So get in there, find a suitable position, pour a glass of wine and settle in for the night. Only question now is whether you watch the movie you came to see or the priceless views sitting just behind it.
