| Sydney Harbour - only $6.40! Seven Miles from Sydney, A thousand miles from care! |
| Home to just over 4.1 million people, Australia’s largest city, Sydney, boasts an endless array of activities and sites to suit any visitor. Maybe it is the beaches, the nightlife or the world-renowned monuments that attract you to this majestic metropolis. Perhaps it’s the sparkling harbour, scenic coastal walks and breathtaking views you just can’t wait to experience. Whatever you fancy, and whatever your tastes, we’ve found a way you can explore the best that Sydney has to offer in just one day - and only costs you $6.40. It is a journey on the Manly Ferry – a trip across one of the world’s most spectacular harbours and an experience that is sacred for travellers and locals alike. The Manly ferry leaves from Circular Quay every half-an-hour from 6am till 12 midnight every day, except on weekends and holidays when services begin at 8am. The ride takes about forty minutes, although in choppy seas the trip can take slightly longer - not to worry though, the excitement and adrenalin of dodging the surf will make you forget time altogether. Pulling out of the Quay you’ll automatically find yourself wedged between two of Sydney’s most prestigious icons, The Sydney Coathanger and The Sydney Dishwasher (or Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House to be politically correct). Make sure you take a few happy snaps here, it will be worth it. Once the engines are fired up to full steam you’ll come across Fort Dennison, or ‘Pinchgut’, a place where convicted convicts were confined in the early 1800’s, and Kirribilli House, the Prime Ministers Sydney residence. Continuing on, you’ll have the opportunity to gaze at some of the cities most exclusive suburbs: Mosman, Double Bay and Watsons Bay. Steaming ahead past Taronga Zoo, you’ll soon come to la crème de la crème of Sydney Harbour, The Heads. Framed by towering North Head to your left and South Head lighthouse to your right, this is the entrance to Sydney and the gateway to this great southern land. Nestled on a thin peninsula just five minutes from North Head is Manly itself, a picturesque district boarded by calm harbour-side beaches and an awesome surf coast. The ferry will dock here at Manly Wharf, however your journey is far from over. Make it through the bustling pedestrian arcade, past the shops, buskers and fish-and-chip hang-outs and you’ll come to the ocean-side of Manly, secluded Shelly Beach to the south and Queenscliff Headland to the north. Whether it’s a walk along the foreshores, a dip in the Pacific Ocean or an ice-cold beverage over-looking the water (we suggest Wharf Bar or Steyne Hotel), you’ll come to understand why locals refer to this place as ‘seven miles from Sydney, a thousand miles from care’. Visitors often find themselves staying at Manly to watch the sun set and the moon rise, and to tell you the truth, there really isn’t a better place to do it. And the best part is that you have another whole ferry trip to look forward to at the end of it all. Believe us, the city looks just as magic at night. A perfect end to a perfect day.
