| Go Troppo on Rotto |
| Imagine an island so isolated it has its own unique varieties of flora and fauna. An island where you can find long deserted stretches of beach that you could call your own. An island with pristine blue water and colourful underwater gardens. But the best about this place is that it lies just half an hour's ferry ride from Perth, the exciting and vibrant Capital of Western Australia, and the fastest growing city in Australia. Because Rottnest Island, or Rotto as the locals like to call it is so close to Perth, it is perfect for a day trip and we believe that it could be one of the best day trips outside of any Australian capital city. Big call, but take the trip for yourself and you'll find out why. For around $30 you can jump on the ferry leaving from Perth City or Freemantle closer to the coast. The ride itself is quite spectacular and will take you about thirty minutes depending on the weather and sea conditions. One of the things that make Rotto so special is that there are almost no private cars on the island so the primary mode of transport for just about everyone is on pushbike. 'Pushies' can be hired on the island or at the ferry terminal on the mainland with singles and doubles to choose from - though we warn you that friendships and no doubt marriages have been broken up on the latter, so maybe the single is a safer option. The island is predominately flat, with some hilly sections near the lighthouse and towards West End, so if you are on holiday and the thought of breaking a sweat fills you with dread don't worry the ride is relatively easy. Along the way you will no doubt spot Rottnest Islands famous mascot - The Quokka. These are tiny relatives of the kangaroo and can be seen by the side of the road all over the island. These furry little rockstars are more than willing to pose for your camera, and are probably the most friendly of all Australia's wildlife - and due to their isolation they simply don't know what a predator is. Making it back for the return ferry can be hard, with pristine beaches and turquoise water luring at every corner. Once on the mainland however you'll be able to stretch those legs and soak it all in by looking at Rottenest island hovering on the horison. A truely memorable experience. |
