| Take a step back in time in Perth |
| It is fitting to say that one of the world’s most isolated cities would have a rich and vibrant history to go with it. From colonisation to the present, it is actually this isolation that has allowed the colourful capital of Australia’s Western State to flourish in its own right. And in saying that, there is no doubt that Perth is a history-lovers dream - and any journey here will definitely be a true step back in time! The city was originally established as a British Colony in 1829 and has since become one of the fastest growing cities in Australia. From the banks of the Swan River right in the heart of town, make your way down the city’s historic capital, Freemantle, a perfect mix of the city’s colonial past and its more modern cosmopolitan lifestyle and you’ll be amazed at what you can find. Dubbed ‘The History Trail’, walking around the streets of Freo (Freemantle for short), you’ll be thinking to yourself, ‘man I should be on a horse and cart!’, adding a quite fitting image to the already painted picture of history surrounding you. Flanked by an endless array of heritage-listed buildings you’ll have to make a stop at Western Australia’s earliest jail, the Roundhouse and the Freemantle Prison, just don’t get caught breaking in! If you do manage to escape, continue your journey by weaving your way through the highly acclaimed Freemantle Markets and you’ll pop out at the Western Australian Maritime Museum. Now, while the building might not look to historic (an architectural masterpiece jutting out into the port, looking more like a 150 foot steel ocean-bound yacht) inside you’ll come across a plethora of maritime artefacts, some of the best in Australia. Finish the day off at any of the cafés lining ‘Cappuccino Strip’ and imagine what it would have been like some decades ago. Gazing up at the sandstone buildings and impressive architecture and you can be forgiven for falling into a daydream. Yes, this is the best preserved 19th Century port streetscape in the world. And yes, you are here. For more information on Perth click here |
