| Fremantle (AKA Freo) |
| There are few places in Australia that have experienced the roller-coaster ride of time as dramatically as the Western Australian city of Fremantle. Originally established as a brutal detention centre for convicts, Freo (as the locals like to call it) soon became a multicultural landing point for migrants before morphing into an industrial shipping port of warehouses and docks. Abandoned warehouses and cheap accommodation started to attract artists and musicians to the region, changing the face of Freo once again into a bohemian centre for art. Nowadays, Fremantle is an eclectic retail and cultural city in itself that attracts over 2 million visitors every year. It is Fremantle’s colourful past that has made it the vibrant culture capital it is today and being located just 25 kilometres south of Perth, is a definite must-do while you are visiting Western Australia’s capital city. Though it is still a major commercial port, handling the majority of Western Australia’s imports and exports, it is the huge range of shops, art galleries, museums, bars, cafes and restaurants, complimented by an endless stream of festivals, events and concerts that make each visit to Freo unforgettable. An easy 20 minute drive from Perth will land you smack-bang in the middle of Fremantle and I suggest that your first port of call should be the popular Fremantle Markets (Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) to start your adventure off with a taste test of some of the delicious local produce. Set inside a grand old Victorian building that was built as a market hall in 1897, the markets have become a bit of an institution for locals and a tantalising experience for visitors. From here, it really is choose-your-own-adventure but in order to find out where Freo really comes from, at some stage you should visit the WA Maritime Museum and the Fremantle Prison. Cappuccino Strip is where to go for a solid caffeine hit or a bite to eat and some of the best shopping in the state is found on High Street just close by. At the end of the day there really isn’t a better place to go for a cool drink than the Little Creatures Brewery on Fishing Boat Harbour. Set in a true Fremantlesque alternative environment, at the Little Creatures Brewery not only can you choose from a very impressive menu, but afterwards you can enjoy a cold beer poured straight from the conditioning tanks and reminisce on the day gone by. |
