Fishing in Darwin Tip

Australia’s Top End is renown for it’s unspoilt beauty and rich marine world. It is a part of Australia where monsters really do lurk beneath, in all shapes and sizes and for that reason is truly an amazing place to test out all your Rex Hunt-inspired fishing skills (just choose wisely before you give your little nipper a kiss on her way home).

There is one species of fish in particular that calls the Top End home and is legendary for it’s ability to have almost any fisherman or woman in Australia salivating at the very thought of reeling one in. The Giant Perch, AKA The Barramundi can be found in just about any body of water in the North from billabongs, to temporary lagoons, rivers, lakes, river mouths and the open ocean (depending on the time of year).

Though these highly sought-after fish have been depleted to quite low numbers in some areas, they are still caught in relatively large numbers across the Top End each year and prove to be one of the fishing-world’s most aggressive fighters (and will continue to do so if enough of these beautiful creatures are allowed to live to fight another day- so just throw ‘em back eh?)

Darwin really is the centre of it all on the Top End and a great place to use as your launching pad while you’re exploring the fishing opportunities in the surrounding region. From Darwin, there is a seemingly endless list of fishing charter boats and tours that specialise in both Barramundi fishing and other species (or both).

After your big day of reeling in the big barra, you can retreat into Darwin’s city oasis at
Travelodge Hotel & Resort Darwin. Grab a cocktail in the bar or relax around the pool and recover from you big day out!!
