Ride that wave! Tip #20

When you travel to or within Australia, there comes a time when you must try something new. Something that perhaps you are just busting to give a go. Something to test those boundaries; to lose that fear barrier. Well believe it or not, five out of this country’s seven capital cities have the perfect new and thrilling experience for you – all less than an hours travel from each CBD and it won’t cost you a fortune.

Sure, to venture beyond the boundaries of that golden sand can be difficult - it’s comforting and relaxing to lie there in the summer sun, on a beaut beach towel, read a book and daydream - however on the horizon crisp lines are forming, waiting for you to ride one of natures finest creations. So grab that plank of fibreglass and catch the memorable Aussie Breaking Wave. It’s something that has ingrained itself in Australian culture and has become a true way of life.

Within the last ten years, surf instruction and surf schools have taken off like wild-fire in Australia, opening up in virtually all popular surf destinations across the country. From the Gold Coast south of Brisbane, Manly & Bondi in Sydney, and beaches just outside of Perth – it’s the newest form of recreation for travellers looking for that rush. Even Aussies from the bush are teaching us city-slickers a few things!

Lessons can range from private tutoring, couple and group lessons (trust us, it’s much more fun laughing at your mates fall off!). Prices range from $20-$50 for a morning or afternoon of pure bliss in the surf, depending on your choice of location, and will be sure to give you a feeling of absolute euphoria.

All surf instructors are qualified surf life-savers and more often than not they have lived at the beach their whole lives. They know anything and everything about the beach, waves, tides and safety – so trust us, you’re in good hands. Your instructor will provide you with a wetsuit (for southern states, and winter months), the most appropriate board for your ability, and will choose the best location for the perfect wave.  You will be standing up in no time!

Hop out from any surf session, and you’ll have salt-encrusted over the eye-lids, shoulders sore from the paddling and probably sport the inevitable nipple-rash (no comments, but don’t worry you’ll find out). With a massive grin from ear to ear, you’ll stand at the local bar, grab your drink and look around – you’ll be the happiest person in sight, guaranteed.

So get out there and ride that wave!
