Dubbed as one of the most diverse cities in Australia, a place where the raw Aussie outback meets the kaleidoscope of the Great Barrier Reef, Rockhampton really is one of those places you just have to visit.
Situated right on the tropic of Capricorn, this laid-back yet cosmopolitan hub of North-Queensland lifestyle offers visitors everything from adventure, history and nature all rolled into one.
For the adventure fanatic try barra fishing on the Fitzroy River, Queenslands largest river and a real secret gem in the fishing world. If you are around in October the annual Rocky Barra Bounty is held (a leading tag and release competition) - however if you don’t manage to hook that beaut Barramundi, be sure to look out for the gold spot estuary cod and King Threadfin. There’s also water skiing, and rowing to be enjoyed too if pulling in that ‘big one’ isn’t enough exercise for you!
However, if water is not your thing, why not take a fighter jet joy flight with MigJet Adventures. Be sure to strap in though, these guys reach speeds of up to 1100kms/hour and climb at a rate of 30000 feet per minute – wow!
Walking around the streets of Rockhampton you can really bathe in history - take a step back in time and hop on the Purrey Steam Tram (Museum open Tues-Sun 10-4), or just take a stroll along Quay Street, a true historical street scape unique to Australia.
And for the nature lover – well, Rocky has it all. The world’s Greatest Reef is just 40 kilometres away from the town centre so you’d be silly to miss out! Jump aboard any reef adventure (we recommend Capricorn Reef Diving) and you can’t go wrong.
The mountains just to the west of Rocky have nature labelled all over it. Hit up Myella Farm for a real outback experience for a day trip where you can try your luck on horseback or on motorbike. ‘Capricorn Dave’ offers a mixture of the two with ‘Beef and Reef Adventures’… so go wild with nature and adventure with Davo.
