Glass House Mountains Travel Tip #19

One of the great things about visiting a city is often what you can discover in its surrounding regions and Queensland's capital Brisbane offers some fantastic day trip options in just about every direction. One of the best however, has to be a trip to the Glass House Mountains just 70Km, or an hour's drive to Brisbane's north.

Getting there is relatively easy; simply follow the Bruce Highway north, take the Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive turnoff, follow the signs and you're there.

It is the cragged volcanic peaks blanketed by lush green eucalypt forest that seems to catch the attention of passing hikers and adventurers, though the park also offers the more relaxed traveller a very scenic place to come for a picnic or an easy stroll through some exquisite scenery.

One such spot is the Stony Creek, a day use area in Bellthorpe Forest Reserve which offers some great places to throw out that picnic rug and whack a few sausages on the wood-fired barbecues (but make sure you bring your own wood because it is a national park after all).

Once you have knocked back a few steak sandwiches (and a beer or two), don't forget that The Glass House Mountains offer some spectacular walking tracks that might allow a glimpse of some aussie wild life and some panoramic lookouts. The walks range from easy to super hard, so depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, there are walking tracks to suit all. Just play it safe and stick to your limits and you're bound to have a great time.
