Crocodiles in Darwin Travel Tip #24

Everything Is Bigger and More Deadly in The North!

The idea of travelling to a destination in order to come face to face with one of the world’s largest man-eaters seems pretty crazy to many, but let’s face it, who is completely sane these days anyway?

Australia’s Top End is home to two species of crocodile, the small and slightly more friendly Johnsons river crocodile and the giant saltwater or estuarine crocodile which has been measured up to over 8 metres in length, and accounts for almost all Australian crocodile attacks on humans.

One of the best places to go to witness these prehistoric masterpieces of nature is the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, Darwin. Despite endless opportunities to experience these creatures in the wilderness outside of Darwin, a more economical way to get up close and personal with Australia’s crocodiles is at Darwin’s own Crocodylus Park and Zoo, only fifteen minutes from Darwin city centre.

While the park’s museum is a great place to come and learn all the facts you need to know about Aussie crocs, don’t forget the real reason why you came out here... to catch an eye-full of some of the most ferocious and fascinating creatures on the planet.

To see first-hand why you shouldn’t do your washing on the banks of a crocodile infested billabong, you can watch keepers feeding huge ‘salties’, (as they are known to the locals) and feel the thunderous slap as they chomp down on a big chunk of meat, even leaping their entire body out of the water to do so!

If you are feeling really game you can even touch a live crocodile yourself. Truely a ‘only in the Top End’ kind of experience.

Visit www.crocodyluspark.com for more information on Crocodylus Park and Zoo.

And of course, for accommodation, check out Darwin’s awesome Travelodge Mirambeena Darwin Resort.
