Bike Brissy! Tip #8

Are you a traveller that likes active pursuits? Do you like that fresh wind in your hair and are keen to discover some new and exciting territory? Do you only have a few days? Well you should be on two wheels rather than two legs.

Queensland’s capital, Brisbane, has over 500km of cycleways and locals and travellers alike have taken to bike riding like it’s out of fashion. All over this vibrant and colourful city cylcleways can be found, connecting one amazing attraction to another. From Brisbane’s historical buildings in the city centre to its stunning array of parklands and waterways, there is just so much to see. With a map in one hand, and two wheels under your belt, the good ol’ fashion pushy is easily the best way to get around.

The most popular path is Bicentennial Bikeway, built in 1988, which works its way from the CBD to Toowong, following the glorious Brisbane River as it meanders through the city. A whole variety of birds and wildlife can be seen on the banks of the river here in amongst the mangroves and the trees, not to mention the countless perfect picnic spots on offer. If your legs are giving way by the end, retrace your cycle route back to the city by hopping on the CityCat from the University of Queensland or North Quay.

Just across the river from the CBD is Kangaroo Point, which also offers visitors great cycling with sensational views of the city skyline. You’ll pass other members of the ‘active’ community trying their luck at rock climbing on the cliffs, and joggers too on their lunchtime breaks.

In Queensland it is actually legal to cycle on footpaths, however just make sure you watch out for pedestrians, have your finger on the bell, and always wear a helmet – you don’t want to go home with any injuries!

Bike hire can be arranged at Riverside Activity Centre on Lower River Terrace at Kangaroo Point, just a short ferry ride from the CBD. And if your body isn’t tired enough after all that riding, this place have Kyaks for hire too, but we suggest you leave that one till another day!
